Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)

Specialist area · Stress, sleep and the body

How stress, sleep and connection reach the body.

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) studies how the mind, the nervous system, the hormone system and the immune system communicate with each other. At Keystone Therapy, PNI informs a whole-person approach to stress, looking at mood, sleep, relationships and physical wellbeing together rather than in isolation.

What the research shows

The hypothalamus, the brain region that regulates basic needs such as sleep, plays a central role in how we respond to stress. When we feel under threat, it sets off hormonal and nervous system responses designed to protect us. In the short term, this helps us cope.

When stress is prolonged, the body can respond as if it is under ongoing “attack”, and the immune system becomes more activated. Research links chronic stress, poor sleep and loneliness with increased inflammatory signalling, which is in turn associated with changes in mood, energy and wellbeing. Understanding these mechanisms helps us choose practical ways to support recovery.

Who this is for

  • Long-term stress that feels physical as well as emotional
  • Burnout, exhaustion or feeling constantly run down
  • Sleep problems alongside stress or low mood
  • Loneliness, isolation or major life change
  • People living with a health condition who want support with the stress around it

How PNI informs sessions

  • Mapping your stress patterns and how they show up in your body
  • Working on sleep, daily rhythm and recovery
  • Strengthening connection and social support
  • Practising regulation strategies that reduce ongoing stress activation
  • Bringing these areas together through the ARCHR²™ Framework

PNI-informed counselling supports stress management and wellbeing. It does not diagnose or treat immune disorders, inflammation or other medical conditions, and it is not a substitute for medical care. Please keep your GP or specialist involved in any physical health concerns.
